Drilling in Gates Mills Village

“The administration of Gates Mills has tried since 2005 to encourage residents to negotiate their gas well leases to provide for proper screening and location of wells.  The goal is to retain the village’s landscape and Western Reserve atmosphere, but not deny residents income from their property.

We tolerate, rather than welcome, gas wells, and we strongly resent the state removing local control.”

Karen Schneider, President of Council

2009

The Gates Mills Land Conservancy Policy on Gas Wells
The GMLC does not and will not drill for oil and gas or liquid gas on its property and will not aggregate with its neighbors who intend to do so. The GMLC has challenged aggregation in the past and will remain opposed to it in the future. The GMLC policy is to restrict against drilling on its easements and will enforce these restrictions to the best of its ability.

Village merely tolerant

Since the United States in the only nation in the world that allows private citizens the ownership of mineral rights, it behooves us to act in a responsible, informed manner before we sign a lease document that grants the control of these mineral rights to any lessee, regardless of promises or hopeful speculations.
